China:Chikungunya virus outbreak spreads rapidly in Guangdong

China (Web Desk): An outbreak of the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus is rapidly spreading across Guangdong Province in China, with over 7,000 cases reported so far.

According to international news sources, the city of Foshan is the epicenter of the outbreak, reporting the highest number of infections. Additionally, 12 other cities within the province have also reported new cases.

Nearly 3,000 new infections were recorded just in the past week. Meanwhile, Hong Kong has confirmed its first case in a 12-year-old child who recently returned from Foshan.

Chikungunya is a virus transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It causes symptoms such as high fever and severe joint pain. Importantly, the virus does not spread from person to person. Although rare in China, Chikungunya is more common in South and Southeast Asia.
