US Presidential Election 2024: Polling underway as Americans choose between Harris or Trump

Washington (Web Desk/Agencies): Voting is currently underway across the United States as citizens head to the polls to select the next President.

Voters in every state and the District of Columbia will choose electors to the Electoral College, who will ultimately decide the President and Vice President for the next four years.

This election is shaping up to be a tight race between the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, and the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.

As the US spans six different time zones, the times for polling vary across the country.

Media reports indicate that voting has already started in states like Vermont, North Carolina, Ohio, and West Virginia, while polling stations in New York and New Jersey are also open.

Voters in New Hampshire and Connecticut have begun casting their ballots as well.

North Carolina, one of the key swing states, could play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the election.

According to reports, more than 78.9 million people have already voted early, either by mail or in person, and any candidate will need at least 270 electoral votes to secure the presidency, out of a total of 538.

The voting process kicked off at midnight in New Hampshire, with the first votes cast in Dixville Notch, a small town that has long held the tradition of being among the first to vote.

In an unusual turn of events, Dixville Notch reported a tie, with both Trump and Harris receiving three votes each.

With such a large number of early voters, the election is expected to be a tightly contested battle, and attention will focus on which candidate performs well in crucial battleground states.
