Muzaffarabad (Staff Report): Pakistanis and Kashmiris of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will observe the ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’ today (Sunday) to express solidarity with Kashmiris and to reaffirm their support their right to self-determination with the people of India-held Kashmir.
People of Pakistan and Kashmir have been observing the Kashmir Day on February 5 every year since 1990.
The first call to observe this day was given by then emir of Jamaat-i-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed and it was implemented by then prime minister Benazir Bhutto and then chief minister of Punjab Nawaz Sharif.
Mass rallies, walks for peace, symposia, meetings and conventions are being held across the country on this occasion, in order to draw world attention towards the plight of oppressed Kashmiri people.
Nation-wide one minute silence will be observed at 10.00 a.m. to honour Kashmiri martyrs.
Members of the Kashmir Committee of the National Assembly Islamabad will visit the office of the United Nations to present a memorandum calling on India to grant Kashmiris the right to self-determination while human chains will be formed at Kohala, Azad Kashmir and other points linking Pakistan and Azad Kashmir.
The main event of the day in Muzaffarabad will be the joint session of AJK Legislative Assembly and Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council.
Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider Khan will lead a public rally which will be taken out from Chatter area in the afternoon.
