Bilawal urges UN to play active role in reducing Pakistan-India tensions

New York (Web Desk): Former foreign minister and head of a high-level parliamentary delegation, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has called on United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres to play a proactive role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India, encouraging dialogue, and facilitating the restoration of the Indus Waters Treaty.

During a meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bilawal emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive negotiations on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, underscoring it as central to achieving lasting peace and stability in South Asia.

The delegation briefed the Secretary-General on the humanitarian consequences resulting from the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, as well as India’s alleged unprovoked aggression and violations of the UN Charter and international law.

They stressed the importance of upholding established international agreements and norms in the interest of regional peace and cooperation.

Secretary-General Guterres welcomed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and expressed the UN’s continued interest in preserving stability through restraint and diplomacy.

He reiterated the UN’s support for efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue, in line with the principles of the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
