Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reached out to his party, seeking its backing for the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Bilawal said that a delegation of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, met with PPP Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari as well as himself to seek support for the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The PPP chief said that the proposed amendment includes provisions for the establishment of a constitutional court, the restoration of executive magistrates, and the transfer of judges.

He added that the amendment also proposes removing constitutional safeguards protecting the provincial shares in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

Additionally, changes to Article 243 of the Constitution have been suggested, along with proposals to bring education and population planning back under the federal government’s control.

The PPP chairman further stated that the draft amendment aims to resolve the longstanding deadlock over the appointment of members to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Bilawal said the PPP’s top leadership has decided to hold further consultations on the issue and announced that the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) will convene on November 6 to formulate an official stance on the proposed amendment.

As per the sources, the federal government is now weighing the proposal for the 27th Constitutional Amendment, coming nearly a year after the approval of the 26th Amendment, which introduced major judicial reforms.

That legislation had authorized the creation of constitutional benches and limited the tenure of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to three years.

In addition, the 26th Amendment set a firm deadline of January 1, 2028, to bring an end to Riba, or interest-based banking, within the country’s financial system.

The 26th Constitutional Amendment was enacted last year after being approved in an overnight parliamentary session held in October 2024.
