Senator Prof Sajid Mir passes away in Sialkot 

Sialkot (Web Desk): Senator Professor Sajid Mir, the Central President of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees, has passed away at the age of 87.

According to family sources, he had been unwell for several months and had undergone both spinal surgery and a heart bypass procedure, which left him bedridden. He breathed his last at a local hospital during the early hours of the morning.

Born on October 2, 1938, in a religious Kashmiri family in Sialkot, Professor Mir belonged to a lineage of noted Islamic scholars, being a relative of the renowned scholar Muhammad Ibrahim Mir Sialkoti.

Sajid Mir began his academic journey with a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of the Punjab in 1960, later earning a second Master’s in Islamic Studies from the same university in 1969.

Before entering public life, he spent part of his career as a teacher in Nigeria. Upon returning to Pakistan in 1985, he became actively involved in religious and political circles.

His political career formally began in 1994 when he was elected to the Senate on a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket.

During his long and respected tenure in the Senate, Professor Mir held various key roles, including chairperson of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology. He was also an active member of other important Senate bodies such as the Committees on Rules of Procedure and Privileges, Government Assurances, and Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.

Professor Mir’s influence within the religious community remained unmatched. In February of this year, he was elected Ameer of Markazi Jamiat Ahle Hadith Pakistan for a record seventh time, reflecting the trust and esteem in which he was held by his peers.

His efforts extended beyond national borders as he played a significant role in promoting Pakistan’s religious diplomacy, particularly in strengthening relations with Saudi Arabia.

Following news of his passing, condolences poured in from across the country.

Political and religious leaders expressed grief over the loss of a man who had contributed immensely to both Islam and the nation.

Among them was Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif, who called him “a steadfast and sincere leader who rendered invaluable services to Islam and Pakistan.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday expressed his deep grief and sorrow over the death of Amir of Jammat Ahle Hadith, Senator Professor Sajid Mir.

The prime minister prayed for the high ranks of the departed soul and for the bereaved family to bear the loss with fortitude.

PM Shehbaz said that late Sajid Mir had been a foresighted political personality and Islamic scholar whose demise had created a vacuum in the national political scene which could hardly be filled.
