PM Shehbaz invites parliamentary leaders for in-camera briefing on regional tensions 

Islamabad (Web Desk): Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar informed the National Assembly on Tuesday that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has summoned parliamentary leaders for a briefing scheduled on Wednesday.

According to the minister, the session is intended to bring lawmakers up to date on the evolving regional situation and related strategic matters. He added that the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has been directed to coordinate with all parliamentary leaders to ensure their presence at the meeting.

Tarar explained that the government intends to act in line with the consensus reached during parliamentary discussions regarding Pakistan’s strategic and regional policies. He stressed that certain issues carry sensitive implications that cannot be publicly discussed, particularly given the regional context and Pakistan’s relationships with fellow Muslim nations.

The minister highlighted Pakistan’s ties with Iran, describing the neighboring country as a brotherly Islamic state with deep-rooted historical connections.

He also pointed to Pakistan’s longstanding and unique relationship with Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the Kingdom’s role as custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the longstanding defense cooperation agreements that have historically strengthened bilateral ties.

Taking these sensitivities into account, Tarar noted, tha PM Shehbaz decided it was essential for all relevant stakeholders to meet collectively to review and discuss the issues thoroughly.

Referring to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, he acknowledged the veteran politician’s guidance as particularly valuable due to his experience and understanding of national affairs.

Earlier, Maulana Fazlur Rehman had suggested holding a closed-door parliamentary session to brief lawmakers in detail about Pakistan’s strategic position in the changing global landscape.

He proposed that such a meeting would clarify Pakistan’s international stance, the message it wishes to convey to the global community, and the role it intends to play amid current geopolitical developments.

The JUI-F chief emphasized that as the supreme representative body of the people, Parliament has the right to be fully informed on crucial national matters.

Lawmakers, he said, should receive a comprehensive briefing on Pakistan’s strategic positioning, foreign policy direction, and diplomatic posture.
