Lahore/Quetta/Karachi/Peshawar (Staff Report/Agencies): The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan on Wednesday rose to 80,463 after 4,131 new infections were reported over the past 24 hours.
Overall, 29,489 cases were reported in Punjab, 31,086 in Sindh, 10,897 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 4,740 in Balochistan, 779 in Gilgit Baltistan, 3, 188 in Islamabad, and 284 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
According to the government's Covid-19 portal, the death toll related to coronavirus has reached 1,688 with 67 fatalities reported during the last 24 hours while at least 28,923 patients have fully recovered.
The number of coronavirus cases has continued to soar despite the country remained under a lockdown nearly one and a half month.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the provincial governments to play a pro-active role to create awareness among people about implementation of SOPs to protect them from the virus, the Radio Pakistan reported.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad to review fulfillment of the needs of doctors and healthcare workers, he paid tribute to doctors and healthcare staff who are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic on forefront without caring for their own lives.
The premier said the entire nation was proud of them who were fighting to save them from the deadly pandemic.
PM Imran said that fulfilling all requirements of doctors and healthcare staff is top most priority of the government and they would leave no stone unturned in this regard.
The meeting also reviewed various steps to fulfill all requirements including provision of protection kits and equipment of doctors, paramedics and healthcare works who are fighting the war against the coronavirus.
It is pertinent to mention that the global coronavirus cases have reportedly surpassed 6.39 million and death toll tops 379,000.
