PECA aims to curb fake news, protect digital media, claims info minister

Lahore (Web Desk): Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has emphasized that the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) is intended to combat the spread of fake news and mitigate the harm caused by social media.

Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) Union, the minister highlighted the importance of regulating social media, warning that it should not be allowed to operate unchecked under the guise of journalism.

He pointed out that online platforms are increasingly being used to spread fake propaganda, misinformation, harassment, child exploitation, threats to national security, and personal defamation, all of which contribute to growing unrest in society.

Tarar also announced the formation of a Digital Media Protection Authority aimed at overseeing digital platforms. The new authority will include representatives from the private sector, press clubs, and journalist organizations, along with journalists and IT professionals who will form part of a tribunal responsible for swift decision-making.

He informed that tribunals will be required to issue rulings within 24 hours, and those seeking appeals will be able to approach the high courts or Supreme Court.

The minister assured that all relevant stakeholders would be consulted in finalizing the framework for this authority.

Tarar described the regulation of social media as a crucial step in curbing harmful content and preventing the spread of misinformation. He urged journalistic organizations to lend their support to the legislation, which he said would align with global best practices.

Attaullah Tarar also touched upon the damage caused by corruption, acknowledging that it has severely affected institutions and reaffirming the government’s commitment to reforming these institutions under the Ministry of Information to make them more efficient and profitable.
