Taliban regime providing safe havens to terrorist groups, says former UN official 

Kabul (Web Desk): Taliban-led Afghanistan has become a refuge for both regional and global militant organisations, raising fresh concerns over the security and stability of the wider region.

In an interview with Afghan media outlet Amu TV, former United Nations (UN) counterterrorism official Edmund Fitton-Brown alleged that the Taliban regime is allowing Al-Qaeda to operate freely by providing the group with secure hideouts, training camps, and opportunities to recruit new members inside Afghanistan.

He further claimed that the Afghan Taliban are also permitting Al-Qaeda and Fitna al-Khawarij, also known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, to use Afghan territory as a base for carrying out cross-border attacks against Pakistan.

Fitton-Brown also cautioned Western nations against treating the Taliban administration as a credible or dependable ally in counterterrorism, arguing that the group's actions continue to create space for extremist organisations to strengthen their presence in Afghanistan.
