Heavy rain lashes Islamabad, Rawalpindi, WASA enforces emergency across twin cities

Islamabad (Web Desk): Torrential rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday caused major urban flooding, turning roads into streams and severely disrupting daily life, prompting Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to enforce rain emergency across the twin cities.

In response to the rising water levels, particularly in Nullah Lai, authorities have issued a high alert and emergency measures are now in place.

According to WASA spokesperson, Islamabad witnessed heavy downpours in several areas, with 40 millimeters of rain recorded in Saidpur and a substantial 92 millimeters at the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) station.

In Rawalpindi, intense rainfall was also reported, including 25 millimeters in Shamsabad, 35 millimeters in Pirwadhai, and 60 millimeters in New Katarian.

WASA’s Managing Director, Muhammad Salim Ashraf, confirmed that the water levels in all stormwater drains, especially Nullah Lai, are being closely monitored. At Katarian, the water level in Nullah Lai has reached 13 feet, while at Gawalmandi it stands at 4 feet. These readings have prompted immediate action from the authorities to prevent any potential flooding disasters.

A rain emergency has officially been declared, and WASA teams equipped with heavy machinery have been deployed across critical areas.

The agency has assured the public that all necessary preparations are in place to manage any emergency situation.

Continuous monitoring of the rainfall and drainage levels is underway to ensure swift response to any developments.

Residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel.

WASA has also advised the public to report any emergencies promptly as teams remain on high alert to address weather-related incidents.
