Water rights of 240 million Pakistanis to be defended by all means: Info Minister Tarar

Islamabad (Web Desk): Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), declaring that the country will protect its water rights under all circumstances.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad, the minister described the Indus River as the backbone of Pakistan’s survival and stressed that the government would defend the rightful share of water belonging to the nation’s 240 million people who rely on the Indus River System.

The minister said preserving the river system is a collective national obligation, adding that the waters of the Indus should continue to symbolize harmony, cooperation, and shared prosperity for future generations.

He maintained that Pakistan remains fully committed to protecting the lives, livelihoods, and interests of millions whose daily existence depends on the river.

Tarar emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be modified, revoked, suspended, or placed on hold through any unilateral action.

He noted that the agreement was reached through mutual consent, making it clear that any future changes can only be made with the agreement of both signatories.

Referring to India’s move to unilaterally place the treaty in abeyance, the minister said the attempt had failed and instead exposed India to criticism and legal setbacks on several international platforms.

Highlighting the growing threats posed by climate change and increasing water scarcity, Tarar underscored that preserving the Indus Waters Treaty has become more critical than ever.

He asserted that any effort to obstruct Pakistan’s water flow would ultimately be unsuccessful, warning that turning water into a political weapon or attempting to alter long-standing agreements without consensus threatens regional peace, stability, and the principles of international law.

The minister said Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to peaceful engagement, constructive dialogue, and the faithful implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

The information Tarar warned that if any attempt is made to deprive Pakistan of its rightful water, the country’s leadership is fully determined to respond effectively and ensure that the water rights of the Pakistani people are restored and protected.
