PM Shehbaz reaffirms Pakistan's commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, constitutional supremacy

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to further strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the supremacy of the Constitution, reinforce parliamentary governance, ensure transparency and accountability, safeguard the rule of law, and promote meaningful public involvement in national decision-making.

In his message issued on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed on June 30, the prime minister said the Constitution of Pakistan provides for a democratic system rooted in representative governance.

“In accordance with the spirit of the Constitution, sovereignty belongs to the people, and their elected representatives exercise this authority as a sacred trust for the service, welfare, and prosperity of the nation,” the PM Office Media Wing, in a press release, quoted the prime minister as saying

Marking the International Day of Parliamentarism, the premier urged the nation to reaffirm its steadfast commitment to constitutional supremacy, parliamentary democracy, federalism, inclusivity, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the people.

PM Shehbaz said Parliament remains the country’s foremost constitutional platform where the public’s hopes, concerns, and aspirations are expressed and transformed into legislation.

“It is the institution where laws are enacted, national issues are deliberated upon, and oversight is exercised to ensure the prudent utilization and protection of public resources,” he added.

The prime minister said Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy has achieved notable progress in fostering inclusivity and strengthening representation. He noted that Parliament, as a truly representative institution, provides an effective voice to women, minorities, smaller provinces, and other historically underrepresented sections of society.

“Constitutional safeguards have been established to ensure their participation and to protect their legitimate rights and interests. The reserved seats for women and non-Muslim citizens in the National Assembly and Senate stand as a testament to this constitutional commitment. The Senate, by providing equal representation to the federating units, further strengthens the federal character of Pakistan and contributes to national cohesion and unity,” PM Shehbaz said.

The premier stressed that transparency, public access, and modern parliamentary practices are fundamental to democratic governance.

He said Pakistan’s Parliament has introduced significant measures to promote openness and strengthen public engagement by making legislation, parliamentary debates, committee reports, and other official records easily accessible to citizens.

The prime minister also said Pakistan’s Parliament continues to play an active part in parliamentary diplomacy at the international level.

Through its participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union, parliamentary friendship groups, and other global forums, he said Pakistan is contributing to the advancement of international peace, dialogue, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, and global cooperation.

“Parliament serves as the crucial link between the people and the state, ensuring that governance remains aligned with the aspirations, expectations, and collective well-being of our citizens,” PM Shehbaz asserted.
