NDMA urges provinces, regions to stay vigilant ahead of expected cold wave

Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged all provincial and regional disaster management agencies to remain alert as a westerly weather system is expected to affect various parts of Pakistan in the coming days.

As per the forecasts, the system will move into western Pakistan on the night of December 29, strengthen by December 30, and spread across most upper and central regions by December 31. Its effects are likely to linger in northern areas until January 2, 2026.

Heavy snowfall under this weather system could make roads treacherous and disrupt travel in high-altitude areas such as Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli between December 30 and January 2.

The NDMA has also warned of potential landslides and avalanches in hilly regions of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Travelers and tourists have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary journeys to these vulnerable locations.

Meanwhile, the wet spell is expected to improve foggy conditions in central and southern Punjab as well as upper Sindh.

In anticipation of these risks, the NDMA has instructed all Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), and the ICT Administration to remain vigilant, keep emergency teams ready, and take proactive measures to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

The authority stressed that it is continuously monitoring developments and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure swift responses to any emergencies.

The public has been advised to stay updated through the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app, particularly before traveling to the affected regions.
