Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed remembered on 78th martyrdom anniversary

Islamabad  (Web Desk): The nation is observing the 78th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, the first recipient of Pakistan's highest military honour, in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice.

Captain Muhammad Sarwar was born on November 10, 1910, in Singhori village of Gujjar Khan. He was commissioned into the Punjab Regiment in 1944 and later took part in the First Kashmir War.

On July 27, 1948, while leading his troops during fierce fighting at Tilpatra in Azad Kashmir, Captain Sarwar embraced martyrdom while defending the Kashmir cause.

His exceptional courage, outstanding leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty earned him the Nishan-e-Haider, making him the first Pakistani soldier to receive the country's highest military decoration.

He is remembered for leading from the front and displaying remarkable tactical skill and determination in the face of intense enemy resistance.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday paid tribute to Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, on his 78th martyrdom anniversary, commending his unmatched bravery, supreme sacrifice, and lifelong commitment to the country.

In separate statements, both leaders conveyed the nation’s respect for the fallen hero, saying Captain Sarwar Shaheed created a remarkable example of courage, loyalty, and devotion by sacrificing his life during the First Kashmir War on July 27, 1948, while fighting for the cause of Kashmir.

They highlighted that Captain Sarwar Shaheed was Pakistan’s first recipient of the Nishan-e-Haider and said his extraordinary sacrifice and historic honor would remain a permanent part of the country’s legacy.

President Zardari said the courage displayed by Captain Sarwar Shaheed in giving his life for Kashmir’s freedom continues to represent the highest values of bravery, responsibility, and patriotism. 

He added that the heroic officer’s dedication to duty and exceptional military skills secured him a distinguished place in history.

The president stated that those who sacrifice their lives for Pakistan’s defense are among the nation’s greatest assets, adding that courageous soldiers like Captain Sarwar Shaheed remain a source of pride and strength for the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Captain Sarwar Shaheed’s determination and fearless commitment proved that the entire nation stands united whenever the defense of the homeland is challenged.

He said the martyr’s spirit of patriotism, devotion to duty, and unforgettable battlefield sacrifice would continue to inspire future generations. The prime minister reaffirmed that Pakistan remains proud of Captain Sarwar Shaheed and all the martyrs who laid down their lives in service of the nation.

Meanwhile, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, and the Armed Forces of Pakistan solemnly commemorate the 78th martyrdom of Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider.

According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), they paid rich tribute to his unparalleled courage, unwavering commitment and supreme sacrifice in the defence of the nation.

“On 27 July 1948 during the First Kashmir War at Tilpatra, Azad Kashmir, Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed became the first Pakistani to be recipient of Nishan-e-Haider after embracing martyrdom in the line of duty for freedom of Kashmir. Leading his men from the front, he displayed extraordinary courage, exceptional tactical brilliance and unwavering devotion to duty,” the statement said.

The military’s media wing said that his eternal sacrifice stands as a timeless symbol of courage, resilience and selfless devotion to the nation.

“The people and Armed Forces of Pakistan pay profound tribute to his enduring legacy with the deepest respect and gratitude. His supreme sacrifice continues to inspire present and future generations to uphold the highest principles of duty, honour and patriotism,” the ISPR said.
