Dar, Miliband discuss bilateral ties, regional developments

London (Web Desk): Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held delegation-level talks with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in London on Thursday during his official visit to the United Kingdom (UK).

The meeting focused on the broad range of relations between Pakistan and Britain, with both sides discussing ways to further expand cooperation and strengthen their longstanding partnership.

During the discussions, the two countries agreed to introduce a formal and structured consultation process between their respective foreign ministries.

The proposed mechanism will provide a regular platform to discuss different areas of bilateral cooperation and assess developments in key fields.

Dar and Miliband also exchanged perspectives on important regional and global issues, with particular attention given to the changing situation in the Middle East.

DPM Dar outlined Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives and mediation efforts aimed at supporting peace in the region and briefed the British foreign secretary on the progress made through these engagements.
Miliband welcomed Pakistan’s positive contribution, particularly its efforts to encourage dialogue, diplomatic engagement and greater stability in the Middle East.

The discussion also covered the Indus Waters Treaty and regional security. Dar voiced concern over what he described as India’s continued disregard for its international responsibilities, stressing that international law and existing treaty obligations must be respected.

He also raised Pakistan’s concerns about security threats originating from Afghan territory, particularly the presence and activities of terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan and targeting Pakistan.

Both sides agreed that continued diplomatic engagement would remain essential for promoting peace, stability and cooperation across the region and beyond.

The two leaders also acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Pakistani community in Britain, noting its role in deepening the historic relationship and strengthening connections between the people of Pakistan and the UK.
