The untold story behind the four-digit ATM PIN code

Islamabad (Web Desk): An ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is now commonly used worldwide, and most users rely on a four-digit PIN code to access their bank accounts.

The PIN used in ATMs and other digital systems stands for Personal Identification Number, which is used to verify a user’s identity before granting access to financial or secure services.

The concept of the PIN system was introduced by Scottish engineer James Goodfellow, who developed the technology and registered its patent for ATM machines and PIN-based security in 1966.

Interestingly, another inventor, John Shepherd-Barron, is also widely credited with the early development of ATM technology.

However, Goodfellow is recognized for introducing the encrypted card and PIN-based authentication system, which became the foundation of modern ATM security used globally today.
