Magnitude 6.6 earthquake hits Philippines’ Mindanao, no tsunami threat reported

Manila (Web Desk): A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Friday, according to the country’s state seismology agency, with no tsunami warning issued.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor was recorded about 90 kilometres southwest of Balut Island in Davao Occidental province at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Authorities said aftershocks are expected, although the possibility of a tsunami has been ruled out. No immediate reports of casualties or major damage were received following the quake.

The latest earthquake comes weeks after a more powerful 7.8-magnitude quake hit Mindanao on June 8. According to the Philippines’ civil defence agency, that earlier disaster left at least 81 people dead and more than 1,000 injured.

Officials and emergency teams continue to monitor the situation as assessments are carried out in affected areas.
