Washington (Web Desk): The United States (US) has imposed a fresh round of sanctions on Iran, targeting vessels, companies, and individuals accused of financing Tehran’s ballistic missile programme.
The measures are aimed at disrupting the financial networks that Washington says are helping fund Iran’s weapons development activities.
Under the new sanctions, 12 ships, along with several companies and individuals, have been designated.
Any assets they hold within US jurisdiction will be frozen, and American citizens and entities are prohibited from engaging in financial transactions with them.
The move is intended to cut off revenue streams that US authorities believe are being channelled into military procurement and support for allied groups.
The action forms part of President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iran has been exploiting the global financial system through illicit oil sales, using the proceeds to acquire weapons and back what Washington describes as terrorist organisations.
In addition to the economic measures, the US has bolstered its military posture in the Middle East.
Two aircraft carriers and large contingents of fighter jets have been deployed to the region, a step seen as reinforcing preparedness for any potential military action involving Iran.
