Islamabad (Web Desk): The Supreme Court (SC) registrar’s office on Tuesday accepted a contempt of court petition submitted by Dr Uzma Khan, sister of imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, concerning the alleged non-compliance with the court’s directive regarding his transfer to a hospital.
Earlier in the day, the registrar’s office had returned the petition after pointing out an objection.
Sources said the application did not contain a detailed list of allegations against the respondents. Dr Uzma subsequently submitted the petition again after removing the objection, following which it was registered under case number 8/2026.
Alongside the contempt petition, Dr Uzma also approached the SC seeking an expedited hearing, stressing concerns over her brother’s health condition.
She stated that the request for an early hearing was directly linked to the former prime minister’s health and safety, arguing that the matter required urgent judicial attention.
According to the petition, the federal government failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive concerning Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital and instead acted contrary to the court’s ruling.
Dr Uzma contended that if the government had any uncertainty about the court’s instructions, it should have sought clarification from the relevant judicial forum rather than taking a different course of action.
She further maintained that the authorities were not permitted to disregard or alter the Supreme Court’s decision and asked that her contempt petition be taken up during the current week.
Dr Uzma had originally moved the SC over what she described as a violation of the order concerning the transfer of the incarcerated PTI founder to Shifa International Hospital.
In the petition submitted on August 22, she requested the initiation of contempt proceedings against those allegedly responsible for failing to follow the court’s directions.
She also sought show-cause notices and asked the court to require the concerned officials to appear personally.
PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja and lawyer Uzair Bhandari submitted the petition on Dr Uzma’s behalf.
In its August 18 ruling, the Supreme Court had instructed authorities to move Imran Khan, who is being held at Adiala Jail, to Shifa International Hospital for a medical assessment.
The authorities, however, took him to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also available at PIMS during the examination.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 after being convicted in several cases, which he and his party have repeatedly characterised as politically driven.
Since his government was removed through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, the former premier has been involved in a number of legal proceedings.
Following the top court’s August 18 directive, the federal government filed a review petition challenging the decision.
The registrar’s office subsequently returned that petition after raising objections.
Later, Islamabad Chief Commissioner also approached the Supreme Court with a request for an early hearing of the government’s review petition against the order.
The PTI has accused the government of disregarding the SC’s instructions by not transferring its founder to Shifa International Hospital.
The government, meanwhile, has defended its decision, maintaining that security considerations were the sole reason for sending Khan to PIMS instead.
