First round of talks concludes in Switzerland as US, Iran agree on 60-day roadmap for final peace deal 

Burgenstock (Web Desk): The United States (US) and Iran have agreed on a comprehensive roadmap to reach a final peace deal within the next 60 days, while also establishing a dedicated arrangement to help bring an end to the conflict in Lebanon.

The breakthrough came as the first round of high-level negotiations held under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concluded in Burgenstock, Switzerland on Monday.

A joint statement released by Pakistan and Qatar said that delegates from Iran, the US, and the two mediating countries, Qatar and Pakistan, took part in the discussions.

The negotiations are scheduled to continue throughout the week at the Burgenstock resort, where all outstanding issues will remain under consideration.

The talks were attended by top leaders from the participating sides, including US Vice President JD Vance, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, each heading their respective delegations.

As part of the new framework, Washington and Tehran agreed to establish a direct channel of communication intended to prevent incidents at sea and facilitate secure navigation through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

“The Lake Lucerne Summit was conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Encouraging progress has been made, including the creation of a mechanism for further technical talks,” the statement said.

According to the joint declaration, the parties have decided to create a High-Level Committee under the MoU framework to supervise the mediation process at the political level. Chief negotiators will provide regular updates to the committee and oversee working groups dealing with nuclear matters, sanctions, monitoring, and dispute resolution, along with other relevant issues, to ensure effective implementation of the agreement.

The statement added that the High-Level Committee has endorsed a roadmap designed to achieve a final settlement within 60 days, clearing the way for immediate follow-up technical discussions.

The parties have also set up a communication mechanism aimed at avoiding misunderstandings and accidental incidents, with the objective of ensuring the uninterrupted and safe movement of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, the statement announced the formation of a de-confliction cell involving the negotiating parties and the Lebanese Republic, with support from the mediators, to oversee compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon in accordance with the MoU.

Pakistan and Qatar reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating the negotiations and pledged to continue working to maintain a constructive environment conducive to achieving a lasting agreement.

“The State of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan express their sincere appreciation to the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment to diplomacy and a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” the statement added.

It also acknowledged the support of friendly and brotherly nations for their valuable contributions to the ongoing negotiation process.

Following the conclusion of the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi welcomed the progress achieved through the mediation efforts, stating, “Tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War. Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction and development plan launched for Iran.”

Referring to the next stage of implementation, he added, “1st real test: Lebanon deconfliction cell.”
