Karachi (Web Desk): The Pakistan peoples Party (PPP) defeated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Tharparkar's NA-221 by-election.
According to unofficial results announced on Monday, PPP's Pir Ameer Ali Shah Jilani bagged 103,502 votes while PTI candidate Nizamuddin Rahimoon received 50,570 votes.
The seat had fallen vacant after PPP's MNA Pir Noor Mohammad Shah passed away from Covid-19 in December 2020.
As per the Election Commission data, the constituency has a total number of 281,900 votes and 12 candidates were contesting the election while a total of 318 polling stations were set up for the voting among which, 95 were declared sensitive.
After the NA-221 victory, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari congratulated the party's candidate for winning the by-election.
In a statement, he said, "The people of Tharparkar have shown a mirror to illegitimate and incompetent rulers in the by-elections. The by-polls were the 'selected' government's first test; Imran Khan has failed in all four provinces," he said in a statement.
Bilawal added added that it time for the prime minister to resign.
"All democratic forces are on one page. The will of the people will also succeed in the Senate elections," the PPP chief said.
