First Test: England defeat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs 

Leeds (Web Desk): England produced a dominant display at Headingley on Friday, defeating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the opening Test of the three-match series.

Pakistan entered their second innings with a daunting 238-run deficit but could not withstand England’s relentless bowling attack, folding for only 118 to hand the hosts a comprehensive victory.

The Pakistan innings was under immediate pressure when Jofra Archer struck in just his second over, removing veteran opener Imam-ul-Haq without scoring. The England quick returned in his next over to dismiss Azan Awais for nine, leaving Pakistan reeling at 13 for two.

Shan Masood was then joined by Abdullah Shafique, who came into the contest in good form. The pair tried to rebuild the innings and put on 38 for the third wicket before Robinson broke the stand in the 14th over, sending Shafique back for 15.

Pakistan reached lunch at 59 for three, but any hopes of a strong recovery disappeared after the interval. England's attack tore through the lower order, with Pakistan surrendering their final seven wickets for just 76 runs during the afternoon session. Mohammad Rizwan offered the strongest resistance, top-scoring with a gritty 41 from 39 balls.

Rizwan was one of only four Pakistan batters to reach double figures. Masood made 29, while Shafique and Saud Shakeel contributed 15 and 14 respectively.

England's three-pronged pace attack shared the spoils as Robinson, Archer and Tongue finished with three wickets each. Atkinson also added a wicket to complete an impressive bowling performance from the home side.

Earlier, England resumed their first innings on 364 for eight at the beginning of the third day and extended their total by 45 runs before being bowled out for 409 in 89.5 overs.

Smith and Archer initially frustrated Pakistan's bowlers, combining for 28 runs and helping England push their total past the 400 mark while further stretching their lead.

Khurram Shahzad finally separated the pair, claiming the wicket of Smith for 25 off 52 deliveries, with the batter finding the boundary twice.

Archer continued to squeeze more runs out of the innings before Tongue joined him at the crease. Tongue wasted little time, striking Abbas for a four as England moved deeper into the 400s.

Shahzad then completed his third dismissal by removing Tongue for eight off 10 balls, with the batter hitting two boundaries.

Ali Usman was Pakistan's leading performer with the ball, returning figures of 5-95 from 24 overs to register his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Shahzad finished with three wickets, while Abbas and Mohammad Ali picked up one apiece.
