Trump to meet New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at White House on Nov 21

Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump is preparing to welcome New York City’s Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to the White House on Friday, marking their first meeting since the 34-year-old Muslim politician secured a decisive victory on a platform focused heavily on easing the city’s cost-of-living pressures.

Trump, posting on his Truth Social account, took aim at Mamdani by calling him a communist, adding that more information about the meeting would be shared later.

Mamdani, who describes himself as a Democratic Socialist, swept past his independent opponent and former governor Andrew Cuomo, surprising long-established Democratic figures with a campaign driven by grassroots enthusiasm rather than big-name endorsements.

Although Trump publicly supported Cuomo — a boost that helped the former governor capture over 40 percent of the vote in the November 4 contest — Mamdani remained the dominant force throughout the race and ultimately secured more than half of the total ballots.

Only months ago, Mamdani was far from a familiar name in national politics. His rapid rise to lead the United States’ largest city, a post accompanied by a $116 billion budget and global attention, has stunned political observers.

Mamdani, who has South Asian heritage, will formally take office on January 1, 2026.
