Punjab govt to set up region's largest climate observatory in Lahore

Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of the region's largest and most advanced climate observatory in Lahore.

This was announced during a meeting chaired by Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in Lahore on Monday where the project's comprehensive feasibility report was reviewed.

The report detailed key components such as financial planning, equipment procurement, and land acquisition.

The meeting also decided to establish the latest science centre.

According to details of the official briefing, a cutting-edge scientific research centre will accompany the observatory, designed to deepen environmental monitoring capabilities and promote data-backed decision-making.

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore played a central role by presenting the technical framework and design specifications for the observatory.

As per the official plan, the Climate Observatory will be headquartered within the Punjab Planning and Development complex, while its core infrastructure will be developed at the designated Environment and Information Communication Technology (EICT) site.

The facility will integrate an advanced automation network that supports real-time communication across multiple systems. It will include a geographic information system (GIS) lab, sector-specific interface technologies, and a highly sophisticated central data hub.

The data processing will utilize MRI-based systems, enabling in-depth climate modeling and predictive analytics.

To ensure long-term capacity building, the initiative will launch a specialized internship platform focused on training environmental professionals across diverse sectors.

Additionally, the observatory will feature a robust data archiving mechanism, a centralized coordination unit, and an international communication cell aimed at fostering partnerships with global climate institutions. Authorities also disclosed that the centre will adopt a contemporary governance model to ensure efficient management.

The recruitment process for internationally credentialed experts is already under review, with the goal of aligning the institution with global best practices.

The senior Punjab minister also directed the formation of a streamlined organizational structure that ensures responsive and effective operations.

During the session, experts highlighted that the observatory will serve as a key resource in identifying environmental hazards, enabling immediate responses through real-time analysis, and enhancing the province's capacity to manage climate-related risks.

Its establishment is expected to significantly advance the scientific infrastructure of Punjab and foster global information exchange on environmental issues.

Describing the project as a vital step forward, Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that Punjab Maryam Nawaz vision and commitment, noting that the observatory forms a cornerstone of Punjab’s broader strategy for climate resilience.

With advanced tools and a globally connected approach, the facility will play a critical role in anticipating environmental shifts and reinforcing the province’s disaster preparedness and environmental governance.
