Cairo (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said that youth and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play the crucial role in driving economic growth.
Addressed the D-8 Summit in Cairo, he pointed out that investing in the younger generation is key to building economies that are resilient and capable of overcoming the challenges of the future.
"Energy, innovation, and creativity of young people are invaluable assets, while SMEs not only create employment but also foster innovation and support entrepreneurial endeavours," PM Shehbaz noted.
He called on the D-8 member countries to prioritize initiatives that empower youth and promote entrepreneurship.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that Pakistan, with a significant portion of its population under 30, possesses immense potential that could be harnessed for economic growth, provided that the necessary resources, opportunities, and skills are made available.
He said that Pakistan’s approach to youth development includes a focus on quality education, job creation, and the promotion of entrepreneurship, particularly through its youth-focused programmes.
"Pakistan has one of the largest freelance communities in the world and is investing heavily in information technology training to equip young people with the skills needed to navigate the digital world," PM Shehbaz said, expressing the confidence that this will help transform job seekers into job creators.
PM Shehbaz also highlighted the importance of enhanced transportation links between D-8 nations, suggesting that improved connectivity could help strengthen intra-regional trade and support more reliable supply chains.
Speaking about global peace, the prime minister stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing its significance not just for the region but for global stability.

He congratulated the Egyptian government, and its leadership, on hosting, the D-8 Summit – an important platform, or development cooperation, between like-minded countries.
He also welcomed Azerbaijan as a new member of D-8, saying that “under the able leadership of our brother President, IIham Heydar Oglu Aliyev, Azerbaijan will play an important role, in achieving, the objectives of the D-8”.
Earlier on Thursday, PM Shehbaz joined the leaders of the developing countries as they gathered in Cairo to attend the 11th D-8 Summit.
As the prime minister arrived at the New Presidential Palace – the venue of the Summit – he was warmly received by President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
He penned his remarks in the visitors’ book and shook hand with the participating leaders before posing for a group photo which followed the formal start of the session.
