Heavy rains: Schools in Karachi to remain closed on August 20

Karachi (Web Desk): Due to intense rainfall causing severe flooding across Karachi, all public and private educational institutions in the city will remain shut on Wednesday, as confirmed by Sindh’s Information Minister, Sharjeel Memon.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the upcoming 48 hours will be critical, with more heavy showers expected to batter the city following the ongoing downpour that has already wreaked havoc.

Many roads in Karachi have become waterlogged, leaving numerous children stranded far from home for hours, causing worry among families. Key thoroughfares such as Sharea Faisal and University Road continue to be impassable as floodwaters have not yet receded. Additionally, many inner city streets remain submerged, with water levels rising to several feet in various neighborhoods.

The relentless rain has brought urban flooding to a standstill, severely disrupting daily life as major roads are underwater, businesses have closed, and power outages are widespread.

Authorities are urging residents to stay off the roads to avoid getting stuck, especially as large numbers of people returning from work or school have found themselves trapped by rising floodwaters in areas like Malir. The situation strongly echoes the catastrophic flooding Karachi faced in 2022.
