Heatwave likely to grip multiple regions, NDMA issues impact-based weather alert

Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has released a weather warning highlighting an impending severe heatwave expected to hit South Punjab, Sindh, Eastern Balochistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) from June 18 through June 22.

This alert, issued by NDMA's National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), advises the public to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme heat.

The advisory strongly recommends minimizing outdoor activities during peak hours from 11am to 4pm, drinking ample water even without thirst, and wearing light-colored, loose garments.

It also stresses the importance of using protective accessories such as hats or umbrellas when stepping outside.

A crucial reminder warns against leaving children or elderly persons unattended inside parked vehicles, while encouraging communities to regularly check on vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and those with health issues.

Meteorological conditions contributing to this heatwave include persistent high-pressure systems in the upper atmosphere, leading to soaring temperatures especially across southern Punjab, Sindh, eastern Balochistan, and certain areas of KP.

The hardest-hit locations are expected to include Jacobabad, Dadu, Larkana, Sukkur, Khairpur, and Nawabshah in Sindh; Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur in southern Punjab; Sibi, Nasirabad, Dera Murad Jamali, and Jaffarabad in eastern Balochistan; as well as Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, and Bannu in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Daytime temperatures in these regions are predicted to soar between 46 and 48 degrees Celsius, significantly raising the risk of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

The NDMA is actively monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant agencies and advises the public to stay alert to updates issued by NDMA, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), and provincial authorities.

In case of emergencies, citizens are urged to contact local helplines or Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) control rooms promptly.
