NDMA issues flood alert as heavy rain forecast across Pakistan

Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert for several parts of Pakistan as widespread heavy rainfall is expected over the next two days, raising concerns over rising water levels in rivers, streams and urban drainage channels.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre, significant rainfall is likely in upper catchment areas, which could lead to a rapid increase in water levels in rivers and local nullahs. Authorities have warned that the situation may increase the risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas.

Several districts of Gilgit-Baltistan have been identified as being at risk of flash flooding, including Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza and Skardu. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert and follow weather updates and official safety instructions.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, potential flooding has been forecast in Upper Dir, Swat, Bajaur, Malakand, Kurram, Kohistan, Mohmand and Orakzai.

Heavy rainfall in these areas could cause sudden rises in water levels and create hazardous conditions in low-lying locations and areas near rivers and streams.

Punjab is also likely to experience urban flooding in several districts. The areas identified as vulnerable include Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Sheikhupura, where intense rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems and result in water accumulation on roads and in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, parts of Balochistan, particularly Zhob, Sherani and Musakhel, have also been placed on alert due to the possibility of flooding following heavy rains.

The NDMA has urged citizens to exercise extreme caution during periods of intense rainfall. People have been advised against attempting to cross flooded roads, low-lying bridges or fast-flowing water channels, as rapidly rising water can pose a serious threat to life.

The public has also been encouraged to remain updated through official weather forecasts and disaster warnings.
