WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive SIMs may be blocked, warns PTA

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned WhatsApp users that accounts registered on inactive, cancelled or unused mobile numbers could be blocked at any time.

In a statement, the telecom regulator said WhatsApp accounts associated with inactive numbers may be exploited for fraud, deception and other unlawful activities. The authority is therefore taking measures to address accounts linked to numbers that are no longer active.

PTA advised users to ensure that their WhatsApp accounts remain connected to a mobile number that is active and currently in their possession.

The authority explained that cancelled or inactive mobile numbers may eventually be reassigned to new subscribers. This could create privacy and security risks, as the previous owner’s WhatsApp account or personal information could potentially be misused if the number remains linked to the account.

Users whose mobile numbers have been disconnected or become inactive have been advised to promptly transfer their WhatsApp accounts to a new, active number through WhatsApp’s “Change Number” feature.

According to PTA, the initiative is aimed at strengthening digital security, protecting users’ personal information and reducing the risk of cyber fraud and misuse of inactive mobile numbers.

The authority has also urged mobile users to regularly verify the status of their SIMs and take timely action if their registered number is no longer active, ensuring that their WhatsApp account remains linked to a number under their current control.
