Gilani urges OIC members to translate commitments on women into action

Islamabad  (Web Desk): Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has called on member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to move beyond commitments and take practical steps to ensure the socio-economic empowerment of women.

Addressing the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women in Islamabad, Gilani welcomed delegates from across the Muslim world and urged OIC countries to adopt measurable goals for girls' education, women's leadership, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, and the elimination of gender-based violence.

He said Pakistan remains committed to promoting women's empowerment through education, digital inclusion, entrepreneurship, access to finance, and decent employment opportunities.

The Senate chairman reaffirmed that the Government of Pakistan and Parliament are ready to work closely with OIC member states and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) to advance a shared agenda for women's empowerment based on common faith, values, and aspirations.

Gilani noted that women make up nearly half of the population of OIC countries, stressing that no nation can achieve sustainable and inclusive growth while excluding half of its human resources from economic and political participation.

He said Islam granted women the rights to education, property, inheritance, economic participation, and dignity more than 1,400 years ago, adding that the teachings of the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) continue to provide enduring guidance for ensuring women's meaningful role in society.

Paying tribute to Muslim women, he acknowledged their contributions in education, governance, science, diplomacy, business, and public service.

The Senate chairman also praised Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as the first woman prime minister of Pakistan and the Muslim world, saying her vision continues to inspire future generations.

Referring to initiatives such as the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Waseela-e-Taleem, and programmes promoting women-led businesses, financial inclusion, digital skills, and e-commerce, Gilani said these initiatives have played a key role in improving women's economic participation.

He also highlighted landmark legislation enacted during his tenure as prime minister, including laws against workplace harassment, acid attacks, and other discriminatory practices targeting women.
