USCIRF report exposes worsening situation of minorities in India

Washington/New Delhi (Web Desk): The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has expressed serious concern over the situation of Muslims and Christians in India, exposing the country’s so-called secular image.

According to the report, extremist Hindutva ideologies have led to widespread violence against minorities, attacks on places of worship, and hate campaigns.

The report highlights a significant rise in attacks and hate-driven activities targeting the Christian community this year. In Odisha, a Christian priest was subjected to severe violence, drawing international attention, while Christian churches continue to be repeatedly targeted by extremists.

Muslims have also faced severe violations of their fundamental rights. In Uttar Pradesh, 12 Muslims were reportedly arrested in their homes for offering prayers, an act described by the USCIRF as a blatant example of discriminatory treatment.

The report also notes that allegations of forced religious conversion are being used to unlawfully detain minority individuals, a practice that is reportedly on the rise.

The commission further criticizes Indian authorities for failing to protect minorities, with some officials allegedly complicit in the abuses. Many Muslims and Christians now feel unsafe even in their private lives and places of worship.

According to the report, India’s so-called “secular” image has been severely tarnished, and the country is increasingly ranked among the world’s most dangerous nations in terms of religious freedom.
