Ahmadabad, India (Web Desk): In an electrifying Group D match at the ICC T20 World Cup, South Africa narrowly defeated Afghanistan in the second Super Over after a nail-biting tie in the first.
Afghanistan managed 17 runs in the initial Super Over, and South Africa matched them run for run, forcing a second shootout.
This time, the Proteas batted first and set a challenging 23-run target, which Afghanistan could not chase, sealing South Africa’s dramatic win.
Rashid Khan, leading Afghanistan, won the toss and opted to field first. South Africa’s innings began with openers Adam Markram and Quinton de Kock.
Markram fell cheaply for 12, caught off Fazal Haq Farooqi’s bowling. De Kock and Reeckleton then took charge, dominating the Afghan attack. Both batsmen reached their half-centuries in the same over, with Reeckleton scoring 61 and de Kock adding 59. Dwaald Brevis chipped in with 23, and David Miller contributed 20 before being dismissed. Azmatullah Omarzai claimed three wickets for Afghanistan, while Rashid Khan took two.
Chasing 188, Afghanistan started confidently with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Gurbaz played a spectacular innings of 87 off 42 balls, smashing seven sixes and four boundaries.
However, the chase collapsed when five wickets fell in just 13 deliveries, leaving Afghanistan all out for 187 in the final over. Azmatullah Omarzai added 22, and Rashid Khan scored 20. Lungi Ngidi starred with the ball for South Africa, picking up three wickets.
Coming into this match, Afghanistan had lost to New Zealand, while South Africa had earned a 57-run victory over Canada.
