Afghan Taliban regime's crackdown on protesters in Herat raises human rights concerns

Kabul (Web Desk): Afghanistan has witnessed a worrying rise in the use of force against citizens raising their voices for basic rights, with reports emerging of alleged firing on protesters by security forces in Herat, resulting in casualties.

During a protest in Herat, Taliban forces reportedly opened indiscriminate fire, leaving one Afghan citizen dead on the spot while at least 22 others sustained serious injuries.

A range of videos and images circulating widely on Afghan media and social platforms have brought global attention to the tense situation in the region and the alleged violence against civilians.

The footage appears to show unarmed protesters, who had taken to the streets to demand their rights, being dispersed through direct gunfire by the security forces.

Local and international human rights observers have expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that strict policies enforced by the current authorities have placed ordinary Afghan citizens under severe pressure, while any form of public protest or dissent is being suppressed through the use of force.

Following the Herat incident, security in the city has been significantly tightened, and hospital officials report that several of the injured are in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.
