EU warns meta over Facebook, Instagram features, calls for immediate changes

California (Web Desk): The European Union has warned Meta to introduce immediate changes to its Facebook and Instagram platforms, cautioning that failure to comply could result in a significant financial penalty.

The European Commission has raised concerns over certain features on the platforms, including autoplay, endless scrolling and personalised recommendations, saying these tools may encourage users, particularly young people, to spend excessive time online.

EU regulators stated that Meta has failed to properly assess and address the potential risks linked to these features and urged the company to improve user protection measures.

The bloc has demanded that Meta review its default settings, introduce more effective usage breaks and make its algorithms less focused on maximising user engagement.

Meta has rejected the allegations, saying it has already implemented several measures to safeguard younger users, including teen accounts with screen-time limits and restrictions on nighttime access.

The European Union said Meta could face a fine of up to 6 per cent of its global annual turnover if it fails to take the required steps.
