Artificial intelligence use linked to reduced critical thinking: study

California (Web Desk): A recent study has suggested that even short-term use of artificial intelligence may negatively affect human thinking and problem-solving abilities, although experts also acknowledge its benefits.

The research was conducted by experts in the field of artificial intelligence, including researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Oxford, and the University of California.

According to the findings, using chatbots or similar AI tools for just 10 minutes a day can reduce critical thinking and analytical problem-solving skills. During the study, participants were given different tasks, with some allowed to use AI assistance.

The results showed that when this assistance was later removed, many participants made more mistakes or struggled to complete tasks, indicating that heavy reliance on AI can weaken mental performance.

Researchers clarified that this does not mean AI should be banned in schools or workplaces, as it remains a valuable tool for improving efficiency and productivity. However, they emphasized the importance of balanced use.

They further suggested that AI systems should be designed not just to provide direct answers, but also to guide users, helping them maintain their ability to think and learn independently.
