Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has officially launched the CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme, aimed at providing lasting relief to the people of the province by alleviating the financial strain caused by high electricity bills.
During the inauguration ceremony, she highlighted that the scheme would offer free solar systems to 100,000 consumers, and that individuals could start applying for the program through an online portal or via SMS starting immediately.
The Punjab CM explained that previously, around 7.3 million consumers in Punjab had benefitted from a subsidy of Rs14 per unit of electricity.
She emphasized that the government’s focus is to use public resources solely for the betterment and convenience of the public.
The scheme is structured to support consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity per month.
Those who consume 100 units a month will be provided with a 550-watt solar system, while those who consume up to 200 units will receive an 1100-watt solar system.
The Provincial Secretary for Energy further outlined that the systems will be distributed over the course of a year, with a total of 100,000 systems being installed.
Consumers wishing to apply can visit the official online portal at “cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk” or send an SMS to 8800.
Verification for the program will be done using the reference number and CNIC number from the consumer's monthly electricity bill. To ensure fairness and transparency, a computerized ballot will be held to determine the beneficiaries of the scheme.
To safeguard the solar systems against theft, both the solar panels and inverters will be linked to the consumer's CNIC.
This move is expected to curb potential losses and ensure that the resources are used responsibly.
The initiative is also set to have a positive environmental impact, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 57,000 tons.
In addition to providing direct relief to consumers, the scheme is designed to reduce the financial burden on the federal government by decreasing the reliance on costly electricity subsidies.
A helpline will also be established to assist consumers with any queries or concerns related to the program.
