Charsadda (Web Desk): Renowned religious scholar Maulana Idrees Tarangzai was martyred in the Utmanzai area of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa's Charsadda District when unknown armed men targeted his vehicle and unleashed a barrage of bullets before escaping.

The incident took place near Muslim Model School, where the sudden gunfire created panic on the crowded road and drew large numbers of people to the scene within minutes.

Police officials said the attackers appeared to have carried out a planned assault, firing repeatedly at the vehicle and seriously wounding two police constables who were assigned to security duty.

The injured officers were shifted to a nearby medical facility, where they are said to be in critical condition.

Maulana Idrees Tarangzai, who had a significant influence and support among followers, could not survive the injuries and passed away shortly after being taken to hospital.

Videos and images shared online showed the Maulana Tarangzai’s vehicle badly damaged by bullets, with the rear windshield completely smashed, indicating the intensity of the firing.

Following the attack, security personnel cordoned off the area, gathered evidence from the site and launched an investigation.

The killing has once again highlighted growing concerns over targeted attacks in the region. Since the shooting occurred in a heavily populated locality, fear spread quickly among residents as authorities continued efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have expressed profound sorrow over the killing of noted religious Scholar Maulana Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai in a militant attack in Charsadda.

In a statement released on Tuesday, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed heartfelt grief over the tragic loss of Maulana Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai.

He prayed for the elevation of the martyred scholar’s ranks in paradise and strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.

President Zardari also wished a speedy recovery for the police officers who were wounded during the attack.

He said acts of terror carried out by cowardly elements could not diminish the nation’s spirit or determination.

Reaffirming the government’s stance against militancy, President Zardari said that Pakistan’s commitment to wiping out terrorism remained firm and that operations against terrorist groups would continue without discrimination to restore lasting peace in the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of Maulana Muhammad Idrees Tarangzai.

In a statement, he extended sincere condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the deceased scholar.

The prime minister further prayed for the early recovery of the injured police personnel affected in the incident.
