International Day of UN Peacekeepers being observed today

The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers is being observed today (Thursday) across the globe including Pakistan to highlight role of UN peacekeeping forces for world peace.

The day commemorates the efforts of the UN to eliminate human suffering by establishing a situation of lasting peace in countries with wars and internal conflicts.

International Day of UN Peacekeepers was established by the UN General Assembly in 2002 and first observed in 2003. The date was chosen to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the UN’s first peacekeeping mission—the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948.

The day is dedicated to highlighting the contributions of military, police, and civilian personnel who serve under the UN flag, often in challenging and dangerous conditions. It also serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the international community’s commitment to peace, security, and international cooperation.

Over 2,800 Pakistan's military and police personnel contribute to UN peacekeeping operations in African countries, ranking 5th in uniformed personnel.
