Karachi: LEAs thwart BLA's plot to groom teen girl through social media for suicide attack 

Karachi (Web Desk): The Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAS) in Karachi thwarted a planned suicide bombing by the proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) after rescuing a young girl who was allegedly being prepared for the attack.

During a joint press conference flanked by Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Additional Inspector General Azad Khan and Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar said that the girl had been gradually influenced online.

“Terrorists reached out to her on social media, fed her fabricated stories, and systematically manipulated her mindset,” Lanjar stated, noting that she had been on the verge of carrying out a suicide attack before authorities acted.

The Sindh home minister stressed that the messaging spread by militants is built on deception. “Their entire narrative is false. They exploit social media to promote anti-state propaganda,” he said, urging parents to keep a close watch on their children’s online activities.

Lanjar also mentioned that the girl has two brothers, one of whom serves in the police, and reaffirmed that the state stands firmly with the Baloch community. “The state is with the Baloch people,” he affirmed.

CTD AIG Azad Khan said that the girl was first contacted by a BLA operative on Instagram, who later added her to a WhatsApp group where she was exposed to extremist and anti-state content. “She was initially given radical material and then subjected to continuous indoctrination,” he said.

He noted that the girl, like many of her peers, used social media routinely and came from a family with no known militant links.

The plot involved taking her out of Karachi, but authorities intercepted her during a routine check outside the city. “Considering her age, we do not treat her as an accused, and the case will not be taken through the criminal justice system,” Khan explained.

The girl’s family was informed once she was rescued, and authorities assured them that full protection would be provided.

Authorities said swift action by law enforcement led to her safe recovery, averting what could have been a deadly incident, and underscored serious concerns over the increasing exploitation of online platforms by extremist organisations to lure and radicalise vulnerable children.

Meanwhile, in her video statement, aired during the press conference, the young girl, who narrowly escaped being used as a suicide bomber, revealed that extremist groups were promoting terrorism as an act of bravery and a noble cause through WhatsApp groups.

She added that constant exposure to radical content gradually convinced her that sacrificing one’s life was the ultimate purpose. Repeatedly encountering messages of the same nature slowly made these ideas feel real and compelling to her.

Expressing gratitude to the security agencies, the girl credited their timely intervention for preventing her from becoming a suicide bomber.

She urged young people to remain vigilant against online propaganda and deceptive tactics used by terrorist organizations, advising them to protect themselves by avoiding such harmful content.
