Islamabad (Web Desk): International Day for Universal Access to Information is being observed across the globe, including Pakistan today (Thursday).
The theme for the day this year is "the importance of the online space for access to information."
International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) is observed every year on September 28th.
The day serves as a reminder of the importance of universal access to information, promoting transparency, accountability, and the fundamental right to seek, receive, and share information.
It's a day to recognize the role of information in shaping societies and empowering individuals.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ENESCO), recognizing the significance of access to information, the 74th UN General Assembly proclaimed 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level in October 2019.
The day had been proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57 declaring 28 September of every year as International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI).
UNESCO provides a platform and frame for all the stakeholders to participate in international discussions on policy access to information in the digital era as it empowers individuals, enables informed decision-making, fosters innovation, and promotes inclusivity and social progress.
Many organizations and governments around the world use this occasion to raise awareness about the significance of access to information and to advocate for policies and practices that ensure its availability to all.
