Peshawar (Web Desk): The newly elected members of the Khyber Paktunkhawa (KP) Assembly took oath on Wednesday.
Speaker Mushtaq Ghani administered the oath to the newly elected provincial legislators.
The session was delayed for more than an hour due to the ruckus caused by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in the legislature.
The PTI workers rioted raising slogans of “mandate thief” against the opposition.
In the assembly hall, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Sobia Shahid raised a watch, an apparent reference to the Toshakhana proceedings against PTI founder Imran Khan. As she waved a pocket watch, a water bottle and a lota were thrown at her.
Following the oath-taking of MPAs, the speaker announced that the election for the new speaker and deputy speaker would take place tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am. He said that nomination papers could be filed before 5pm to the assembly secretariat.
Earlier, PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub said that party founder Imran Khan nominated Babar Salim Swati as the party’s candidate for the role KP Assembly speaker.
Out of the 145 KP seats, 30 are reserved seats, of which 26 are allocated for women and four are for minorities, have not been notified as the matter is currently being heard by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Elections on two seats were postponed owing to the deaths of candidates in the respective constituencies.
