Germany hit by record temperatures as European heatwave spreads eastward

Berlin / Rome (Web Desk): Germany and Italy are experiencing extreme heat conditions as a severe heatwave continues to spread across Western and Central Europe, pushing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and breaking records in several regions.

The weather system, which has already been linked to dozens of deaths across Western Europe, is now moving eastwards after affecting countries including Britain, France, Switzerland, and Germany, where record temperatures have been recorded in June.

In Germany, a new preliminary national record of 41.3°C was reported near Saarbrücken, close to the French border, according to a spokesperson for the country’s National Meteorological Service.

Scientists say the intensity of the heatwave would have been virtually impossible without human-induced climate change, adding that recent high night-time temperatures have become up to 100 times more likely compared to two decades ago.

Meteorological experts warn that the ongoing heatwave could continue to break records as it spreads further east towards Poland in the coming days.
