Punjab on high alert as 3rd monsoon spell approaches

Lahore (Web Desk): The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a high alert across the province ahead of the third spell of monsoon rains, warning of widespread heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding in several areas.

According to the PDMA, intense monsoon activity is expected to affect most districts of Punjab from July 24 to July 27. In view of the forecast, all relevant government departments, district administrations and emergency response agencies have been directed to remain on high alert and complete all necessary preparations to deal with any potential emergency situation.

The authority said precautionary measures have been intensified to ensure a swift response in case of heavy downpours, flooding or other weather-related incidents during the four-day spell.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of the province, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala, as well as other districts.

The weather system is expected to bring strong monsoon showers that could disrupt normal life in many urban and rural areas.

The PDMA warned that the expected rainfall may trigger urban flooding in major cities due to water accumulation on roads and low-lying areas.

It also cautioned that local streams and seasonal nullahs could experience a surge in water levels, increasing the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable locations.

In response to the forecast, district administrations, Rescue 1122 and other emergency services have been instructed to ensure the round-the-clock availability of personnel, keep heavy machinery and rescue equipment fully operational, and remain prepared to respond immediately to any emergency caused by the adverse weather conditions.

The disaster management authority has also urged residents to take precautionary measures during the rainy spell.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from flooded roads and low-lying areas, and follow official weather advisories to ensure their safety.
