Karachi's former mayor Naimatullah Khan passes away

Karachi (Web Desk): Former Karachi mayor and Jamat-e-Islami (JI) leader Naimtaullah Khan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 89.

According to a JI spokesperson, Naimatulla’s funeral prayers would be offered at MA Jinnah Road on Wednesday.

The spokesperson added that the former city nazim would be buried after his son and daughter arrive from abroad.

Naimatullah Khan was born in Ajmer Sharif (India) in 1930. He graduated from Punjab University with a Masters in Journalism and law degree from Karachi University.

Khan was a longstanding member of the JI and served as the 26th mayor of Karachi from 2001 to 2005.

A lawyer by profession, Khan was the first city nazim under the devolution plan launched by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

Naimatullah Khan is credited with initiating multiple development projects in Karachi and starting a bus project in which he imported busses from Sweden.

The former nazim also remained member of the central consultative committee of Jamat-i-Islami (JI) and he also served as chairman of Al-Khidmat Foundation of JI.

President Arif Alvi expressed his condolences on the passing of former mayor and prayed for his ‘high ranks in the heaven’.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani also expressed deep sorrow on the death of the former mayor. They offered condolences to the bereaved family members.

“His efforts in the construction and renovation of Karachi cannot be forgotten,” said Sindh Governor Imran Ismail.

Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar also expressed his grief on the passing of the former mayor.
