At UN, Pakistan urges immediate ceasefire, return to diplomacy and meaningful dialogue on Ukraine

New York (Web Desk): Pakistan has urged the United Nations (UN) Security Council to uphold the imperative of an immediate and complete cessation of hostilities, a return to diplomacy, and the resumption of sincere and structured dialogue in addressing the war in Ukraine.

Addressing a Security Council session on Ukraine, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, voiced deep concern over the impact of the war on civilians. He condemned the continued intensification of the conflict and expressed alarm over recent strikes targeting vital energy facilities and infrastructure linked to food supplies.

“Such attacks further exacerbate the already fragile global food and energy security, affecting people far beyond the conflict zone,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy emphasised that safeguarding civilians, civilian facilities and humanitarian workers is a basic responsibility under international humanitarian law. He stressed that every party to the conflict is required to honour these obligations.

Referring to Pakistan’s backing of Resolution 2774, introduced by the United States in February 2025, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad reiterated Islamabad’s continued support for meaningful and organised negotiations, diplomatic engagement and multilateral efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.

“My delegation and others in this chamber have repeatedly called for holding earnest and meaningful dialogue to bring durable peace and stability to the region. This entails eschewing the quest for a military solution,” he said.

Pakistan maintained that a peaceful agreement acceptable to all sides, grounded in the objectives and principles of the UN Charter and taking into account the legitimate security concerns of the parties involved, is the most practical route towards securing sustainable peace.

“⁠Pakistan will continue to support all endeavours aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive, and peaceful resolution of this conflict,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said while concluding the statement.
