At UN, Pakistan reaffirms commitment to play constructive role for Afghanistan's stability

New York (Web Desk): Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to playing a constructive and proactive role in supporting peace and stability in Afghanistan.

At a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that Islamabad supports ongoing efforts aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan’s economy, reviving its banking sector, and identifying viable mechanisms to unfreeze Afghan financial assets, which remain locked since the Taliban assumed control in 2021.

The Pakistani envoy also raised serious concerns about the persistent threat of terrorism originating from Afghan territory.

He emphasized that this threat directly affects neighbouring countries, with Pakistan being particularly vulnerable.

Ahmad noted that Pakistan possesses credible evidence pointing to the collaboration between the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant outfits such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Majeed Brigade.

“These groups are working together with the intent to sabotage strategic infrastructure and economic development initiatives within Pakistan, potentially targeting major projects like those under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),” Ambassador Iftikhar said.

The envoy’s remarks highlighted Pakistan’s dual focus on promoting regional peace through economic support while also urging decisive international attention to the issue of cross-border terrorism and the security risks it poses to long-term stability.
