Violence erupts in Mexico after killing of drug cartel boss 'El Mencho' 

Mexico City (Web Desk): Mexico’s security forces have killed one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes—better known as “El Mencho”—the founder and leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in what authorities described as a highly classified and large-scale military operation.

News of his death triggered a wave of intense violence across several parts of the country, shaking multiple states and plunging them into chaos.

According to a statement issued by Mexico’s Ministry of Defense, security personnel confronted heavily armed cartel members in the western state of Jalisco.

The clash involved the use of heavy weaponry on both sides. Officials said Oseguera was critically wounded during the exchange of fire and was being airlifted by helicopter to Mexico City for emergency treatment. He succumbed to his injuries en route.

El Mencho was widely regarded as one of the most powerful drug lords in the world.

Following the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, he consolidated significant influence over the global narcotics trade, expanding the reach and operational capacity of the CJNG.

In retaliation for their leader’s death, cartel gunmen launched coordinated acts of violence in several states, effectively turning urban centers into battlegrounds.

Dozens of vehicles were set ablaze and used as barricades on major highways in an apparent attempt to obstruct military reinforcements and paralyze security operations.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro urged residents to remain indoors as authorities struggled to contain the deteriorating security situation.

Amid the unrest, Air Canada suspended its flights to Mexico, citing safety concerns, while the United States issued a high alert advisory for its citizens in the country.

Political observers suggest the operation came amid mounting pressure on the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum from US President Donald Trump to intensify action against powerful drug cartels.

American officials hailed Oseguera’s killing as a decisive blow to organized crime in the region.

However, analysts cautioned that his death could ignite a fresh and potentially more violent struggle for dominance among rival criminal factions, raising fears of prolonged instability.
