UK, Canada, Australia announce formal recognition of Palestinian state

London/ Ottawa/ Canberra (Web Desk/Agencies): The governments of the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Australia have formally recognized Palestine as an independent state in a coordinated international effort to revive prospects for peace in the Middle East.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a video message released today, announced that London has taken the historic step of acknowledging Palestine’s statehood.

He said the decision was made to restore faith in the peace process and to reaffirm commitment to the two-state solution, stressing that the UK now officially recognizes the State of Palestine.

Canada was the first among the G7 nations to extend recognition. Prime Minister Mark Carney explained that Ottawa’s decision was part of a broader international strategy to preserve the possibility of a negotiated two-state outcome, adding that this recognition underscores Canada’s resolve to work toward peace and stability in the region.

Shortly afterward, Australia also confirmed its decision. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared that his government’s recognition of Palestine reflects Australia’s longstanding policy of supporting two states living side by side in peace and security, noting that the move is consistent with Canberra’s long-held commitment to justice and a negotiated settlement.

The coordinated declarations by these three countries are being seen as a significant diplomatic development, aimed at breathing new life into stalled efforts for a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
