Pakistan’s letter on India’s IWT violations handed over to UNSC president 

New York (Web Desk): Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has delivered a letter from Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar to Ambassador Leonor Zalabata Torres of Colombia, who is serving as President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of June, highlighting Islamabad’s concerns over what it terms India’s continued “illegal actions and violations” of the World Bank-mediated 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s mission, the letter draws the urgent attention of the 15-member Council to two disputed Indian infrastructure projects on the Chenab River system, which Pakistan says are intended to divert water and reflect an effort to unlawfully modify the treaty-regulated flow and usage of the western rivers, effectively using water as a strategic tool with serious consequences for Pakistan’s water availability, food security, economic stability, and overall regional peace.

The correspondence calls on the Security Council to acknowledge what it describes as a rapidly worsening and sensitive situation and to ensure accountability for India’s alleged treaty violations.

Ambassador Asim Ahmad also briefed the council’s president on the overall situation in South Asia and India’s continued non-compliance with its obligations under UNSC resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
